Legal Status in Alaska
Garter snakes have been occasionally reported along the Alaska Panhandle, but their presence in the state has not been definitively confirmed. If found, they should be left alone, because reptiles and amphibians in general may not be collected for commercial purposes, nor have open seasons or legal takes been defined for them. Non-venomous reptiles that are not native to Alaska are legal to import and keep under state law.
The keeping of native and exotic wildlife may be subject to local by-laws and ordinances, as well as other laws at the state or federal level not mentioned here. This page is not a definitive source. Please consult the authorities in your area.
